Correspondence ………………………………………………………            Cheryl Teare

  • Marilyn received an email regarding mentoring/leadership development for young women and wanted to know if UALE may want to consider a working group on this issue
  • UALE was asked by women summer school coordinators to consider our role in recruitment for the schools. The following issues were raised:
    • Whether or not the coordinators can connect with the institutional members to recruit
    • Whether or not the board reaches out to institutional members to help garner support
    • Whether or not more could be done to reach out to unions/institutions
    • Whether or not regional reps should do outreach to have unions send participants
    • How to work together to make sure that the recruitment gets done for all of the schools
    • Mailings that ask unions/state and local federations to post school info on their websites would be helpful
  • It was noted that the role of the board has always been to talk up women’s schools wherever possible, and any coordination/outreach is done by the hosting co-chairs
  • The comment was made that schools don’t have trouble recruiting participants
  • To connect the schools and UALE, Cheryl might want to consider recording a short video to welcome women and make the connection that this is a UALE program
  • Recommendations:
    • Letter to unions, state feds, clcs inviting folks to the summer school and asking them to post summer school flyer on the union webpage
    • Regional Reps – get a letter out to CLCs – work with Al and coordinate with hosts
    • Welcome video from Cheryl
    • Community Liaison should reach out to community groups that received grants – Guillermo has a record of who has been given grants and will share with Jeannette – worker center advisory center next week at the AFL – Marilyn happy to mail out also to her contact list
  • Amanda needs a copy of the letter

to recruit women to the event and educate them about the women’s school

            Southern ……………………………………………………. Keturah Raabe

  • Will move report to next month

            Midwest ……………………………………….………………Barbara Kucera

  • Preparing for Midwest School at Indiana university – new Albany Campus
  • Unable to find what states are in what regions on the UALE website
  • Midwest has a tradition of having a fall gathering – planning on that again –usually takes place in Iowa City
  • Will be doing an e-newsletter – will provide to all board members. Let Barbara know in advance if you don’t want to get it
  • The suggestion was made to “copy” what Keturah is doing for the southern region – it’s lively and getting good input
  • Regions – The four UALE regions corresponded with afl-cio structure at one time – this was changed, because we no longer wanted them to correspond with the afl-cio structure

            East …………………………………………………………. Mary Bellman

  • Will look to use Keturah’s ideas to do outreach
  • Folks in this region want to know more about what people are doing
  • Want to create a listserv – Debra will have the list
  • Rutgers is hosting the NE school – UALE has been a source of support that the women caucus chairs hosted a meeting to discuss how we do this work – Kate Shaunessy did a good job with this – this helps identify the summer schools as a UALE program

Old Business

  • None

New Business

  • Letter came from Sarah Hughes at the Murphy Institute asking to start a roundtable group to address mentoring women. Need to have a small group work on this and come back to this board with ideas. Sarah, Cheryl, Marilyn,
  • This will need to be a UALE Working Group Proposal that is presented at the November Meeting – board has to approve a new working group
  • Regarding reaching out to young workers, the question was asked if there is someone in UALE who would want to start a Working group on apprenticeship
  • This can/should be explored – Cheryl sent info to Sarah Laslett
  • Domenic – Member at Large – Wrote a report to his union about UALE conference, and they voted to become institutional members will be doing an article on the state of labor education in their fall newsletter
  • The question arose as to whether or not the board needs to take a look at all of the duties/responsibilities and look at whether or not duties/responsibilities should be redistributed
  • A discussion on duties/responsibilities will take place at the November, in-person meeting
  • Questions for the Nov. meeting include where it will be hosted and if there will be a curriculum exchange

Good of the Order

  • Standing date and time for UALE Board Meeting is – 2nd Thursday of the Month – 1 pm Pacific/4 pm Eastern
  • It would be helpful to set up a recurring Outlook invite for meeting
  • The following was noted for November’s meeting planning:
    • Cannot be weekends of Nov. 4th or 11th
    • Exchange could be 16th – Directors Meeting the 17th – Board Meeting Nov. 18-19th
  • Julie agreed to chair online working group – still looking for someone to co-chair from university side

(Motion to adjourn)
