City College San Francisco is pnce again under attack, but students, faculty and the community are fighting back. Last fall, we reported about an attempt by City College's administration to make administrative changes that would have seriously weakened the Labor Education Program as well as the other "Diversity Departments": Ethnic, Women's, Interdisciplinary, LGBT and Labor and Community Studies. (See Help Save CCSF Labor Education Program)
Now, the whole college is facing a possible loss of accreditation. According to the Save CCSF Coalition, which organized a march and press conference on July 9,
"The future of San Francisco’s dynamic City College hangs by a thread. The Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges (ACCJC) is threatening to revoke the school’s accreditation as of July 2014, which would effectively close the school. At stake is the community’s access to affordable education."
UALE member Bill Shields, chair of Labor and Community Studies at CCSF writes:
"I'm working with AFT 2121 on their member mobilization campaign. Both CFT and AFT are giving the local strong support. I'm also working with the Coalition. However, it's going to take serious labor and community mobilization to defeat these people. We'll do everything we can from the inside to turnout and lead the fight effectively. A lot will hinge, however, on what the broader movement and our communities will be willing to do.
The defense of our department continues to be linked to the fate of the college. We must save CCSF. Will you help?"
