Dear Friend of the Institute, I am pleased to report that the Murphy Institute has opened the second round of searches this term, including key positions designed to foster student success, strengthen ties to the community, and build our programs. We have initiated the critical search for a new Associate Director for Worker Education. Attached and below, you will find a listing of the new positions, brief descriptions, and links to each of the five job postings. We are again seeking the broadest, strongest and most diverse pool of candidates possible and ask that you do whatever you can to publicize these opportunities through your network. Greg Mantsios Director Job Openings The Associate Director for Worker Education will act as a deputy to the Institute’s Director and play a senior leadership role in developing and managing all credit and degree programs including: undergraduate and graduate degree programs in Labor Studies and Urban Studies; workforce education initiatives; special certificate programs such as Labor Relations, and Public Policy and Administration; and other special programs such as Union Semester and Urban Leadership. Specifically, s/he will supervise a team of 20; oversee student life at the Institute including recruitment, enrollment, and academic progress; and address academic issues and concerns raised by students and/or faculty. S/he will manage communications with Institute faculty and with administrative and academic departments at other CUNY units regarding curriculum, new program development, and appointment of adjunct faculty. S/he will be a resource regarding program policies and procedures, make recommendations to improve department policies and procedures, and assist the Director with outcome assessment and strategic planning. The Manager of Academic Support & Retention will oversee the development and implementation of the overall student retention plan for the Institute. S/he will collaborate closely with senior leadership and the Labor Studies, Urban Studies and Workforce Education teams to enhance student success rates. In consultation with faculty s/he will: identify ‘at risk’ students; develop early intervention strategies; manage academic intervention; and identify existing and develop new resources to assist students identified as at-risk. S/he will act as the ‘retention expert,’ managing, analyzing and reporting data on academic success as a basis for recommending annual retention targets and identifying existing and developing new strategies to meet those targets. The Academic Skills Specialist will work closely with the Institute’s Manager of Academic Support & Retention to support students toward successful completion of their studies through the development and improvement of their basic skills. Collaborating across the Institute, s/he will: assist in developing, preparing and delivering program offerings in basic skills instruction; advise students and colleagues about available services; inform colleagues about program goals, activities and best practices; and coordinate efforts to monitor and assess student progress and program effectiveness. The Enrollment Specialist – Urban Studies will work closely with the Institute’s Urban Studies Program Manager to expand enrollment in all Urban Studies certificate and degree programs, and serve on the institute-wide enrollment management team to assist in the planning and implementation of Institute-wide outreach and recruitment activities. S/he will cultivate/maintain relationships with community-based and other key organizations, and interact with prospective students at events within and outside of the Institute. The Special Projects Assistant will undertake and support special assignments and activities reflective of the Institute’s dynamic nature on behalf of the Director and Associate Directors. S/he will play in a key role in supporting the Advisory Board and cultivating/maintaining the Institute’s relationships with external organizations, legislative bodies, governmental agencies, and other potential supporters. S/he will assist senior leadership with the development of new administrative systems to improve internal functioning of the Institute.
