Definition: This is a highly responsible and professional management position directing the Organizing Department of the Union. Working under the direction of the Statewide Officers, the Organizing Director is responsible for implementation of policies promulgated by the Officers and the Statewide Executive Board regarding organizing, including supervision of organizing staff and the efficient management of organizing resources, and the integration of organizing into the life of the Local. He / She must be a mature decision maker, exhibit good judgment and discipline, and be able to work with people of diverse backgrounds, and effectively move and coordinate a statewide organizing program. Qualifications: • 5 years’ experience as a labor or community organizer. • Supervisory experience including leadership of staff and potential members; staff evaluation; ability to apply discipline; familiarity with administrative tasks including, but not limited to timesheets, leave time and scheduling. • Ability to co-ordinate and direct multiple organizing campaigns from start to finish. • Working knowledge of relevant federal and state laws, especially the NLRA and PERA. • Ability to plan and budget. • Ability to work with Communications Director and Research Director. • Ability to travel within and outside of Pennsylvania for extended periods of time. • Excellent interpersonal skills. Job Duties: A. Staff Supervisor 1. Provide training and supervision of organizing staff. 2. Develop work plans (in conjunction with staff) to further the organizing goals of the SWEB. 3. Provide technical assistance to the organizing staff. 4. Provide consultation and technical assistance to Field Staff who are involved in organizing activities. 5. Develop materials for use in organizing campaigns. 6. Develop and conduct on-going staff trainings with the assistance of the Research Director. B. Statewide Officers and Statewide Executive Board (SWEB) 1. Meet regularly to report on organizing activities, formulate organizing plans, and to make recommendations on staffing and allocation of resources. 2. Provide assistance to Statewide Officers on contract mobilization, planning, and implementation. 3. Report regularly to the SWEB on all organizing activities. 4. Develop a yearly organizing plan for the Local. 5. Direct and oversee the implementation of the SWEB policies concerning organizing. 6. Assist the Organizing Committee of the SWEB. 7. Develop budgetary and policy proposals regarding organizing for the approval by the Statewide Officers and the SWEB. 8. Function as a member of the management team of the Local. C. Program Development 1. In consultation with the Statewide Officers and the SWEB (and in accordance with SWEB policies) to develop long-range plans for organizing. 2. Evaluate all organizing leads in accordance with SWEB policy. 3. Provide basic research (in conjunction with the Research Director) necessary to evaluate potential organizing targets. 4. Maintain regular contact with SEIU relating to organizing campaigns and availability of resources. 5. Select targets for internal organizing in conjunction with Statewide Officers, Field staff, and Chapter officers. D. Direct Organizing 1. Direct the organizing staff and oversee the recruitment and training of Member Organizers. 2. Perform tasks assigned by Statewide Officers relating to contract mobilization and statewide campaigns. 3. Plan, direct, and coordinate multiple organizing campaigns. 4.
