Women Build Nations (WBN) is a conference for women who work in the building construction trades; it is attended by about 2000 people each year. The WBN conference is organized by North America's Building Trades Union (NABTU)’s Tradeswomen's Committee. Topics presented at the conference are all, in some way, connected to tradeswomen or trainings and information of use to tradeswomen.
While this is not a research conference, a group of researchers working with the conference through the National Tradeswomen’s Taskforce is organizing a small research stream with opportunities to present research in a workshop or through posters. There will also be a research caucus for networking between researchers and advocates. Our goal is to present and encourage research that is relevant to current and aspiring tradeswomen and supports their efforts to improve access, equity and opportunity in the construction industry.
Research Topics must be relevant to women in the building construction trades. This may cover health and safety, harassment, routes into the trades (including apprenticeship), work & family, retention, leadership development, policies that increase the demand for women in construction jobs, or other topics tied into the work and community lives of tradeswomen.
Deadline for submissions: Submission deadline is June 15, 2019. Notifications of results will be sent no later than August 1, 2019.
Options for participation: Proposals are welcome from academic or practitioner researchers. We encourage submissions to consider how to engage tradeswomen attendees through the workshop or the poster. Posters should include visual representations of research findings or other project work related to tradeswomen.
For submission, send an abstract no longer than 500 words. The document is to be a word document and include, on the title page, your name, title (degree and/or job), and affiliation as well as your email; it should also include whether you want to be considered for the panel, poster session or both. Email your submission to Erin Johansson at . Include in the subject line: WBN Research Submission.
