UALE Meeting February 11, 2016

President’s Report ……………………………………………………            Cheryl Teare

  • Thanks to Kitty and Sarah for their work to award the research grant which went to LERC
  • The UALE conference was promoted at the AFL-CIO MLK Conference by Jean Dearden

            Website report update ………………….…………………Paul Iversen     

  • Sat., Feb. 20 is the anticipated date for the new website to go live
  • CVCRM will work for on this website which will allow for online payments in different formats
  • The current language that describes UALE will be used on the website since there is no existing mission statement for UALE on the website

Review of Minutes from last meeting …………………………..   Kitty Conlan

  • Kitty had sent minutes for review and asked the board to review for any necessary additions
  • Approval of the minutes was tabled until the March Meeting. Everyone should review notes and send any changes or additions to Kitty by Feb. 26

Treasurers Report ………………………………………………….   Lynda DeLoach

  • Researched non profits on the internet
  • There was discussion about the $4000 that had been allocated for the website and how to reflect that in the current budget as a line item
  • Motion to move $4000 to line 6135 and $1500 to line 6410. Adopted.

Membership ………………………………………………………….             Amanda Pacheco

  • There was a reminder for board members to provide membership testimonials to Cheryl Coney for recruitment materials
  • Member letters went out to Unions and Higher Ed asking them to renew or become Institutional Members
  • Cheryl will check to find out if Institutional Membership letters went out to Community Partners

Regional Representatives: Updates or sharing of information

  • Keturah helped facilitate a CSE Train-the-Trainer in Pennsylvania last week and provided all participants with a brochure and information about becoming members

  • Forwarded Valentine’s email from Tony about the extended conference deadline for discounted costs
  • Will be reaching out to women’s committee for the summer school about membership
  • AFL-CIO MLK Conference recruitment for union summer programs, UALE Conference and membership
  • Following up on the idea of a Valentine’s Special the decision was made to extend the discount membership and conference costs with a Leap Year Special – extended special rate until Feb. 29

Old Business

Update on Constitution amendments…..  Pierre Cote

Conference Planning ………………………… Tony Michael

2017 Conference

  • Everyone received a Matrix with 2 proposed conference themes; everyone is to send their input to Tony

2016 Conference update

  • Next week will receive an updated draft of the conference budget
  • Getting clarification on pending items such as A/V
  • Proposed cultural event – Elise Bryant is working on this – possible live performance at Busboys and Poets - $1000 allocated for the event
  • Elise is working on the Labor Tour –
  • DC Labor Chorus will open the program

Proposal Submissions

  • Only 1 proposal was rejected – to allow for variety of type and representation
  • Proposals that were submitted very late were rejected

Plenary

  • Board will vote on plenary sessions

Registration                      

  • A draft agenda will be shared before the end of the month and used to promote the conference

Constitution and Bylaw Amendments

  • Board members had reviewed proposed changes
  • A motion was made to approve the proposed Constitutional and Bylaw changes. Adopted.

Community Grants

  • 5 orgs have applied for $1500 Grant. 4 represent the original regions and one was added for Canada.
    • Training for Change - Philadelphia
    • Soul School of Unity and Liberation – Oakland
    • NY Worker Center Federation
    • Domestic Workers United - Brooklyn
    • Centro de Derechos de Inmigrante

Future Funding

  • Forming a 501(c)3 is not possible without original papers of incorporation
  • A larger grant/increased funding from Berger Marks will be requested to help fund the women’s schools

Other Conference Business

  • People of Color Caucus Luncheon will be sponsored the UALE which will help to raise awareness and to meet the higher F&B requirements
  • There was discussion about whether or not to pay registration fees for awardees. A motion was made to keep the status quo for how we pay or not pay registration fee for awardees. Adopted.
