The three videos below, shown at the 2014 UALE Conference in Los Angeles, highlight the inspiring struggles of immigrant workers and students in California and around the nation.

The first is a music video, "Wake Me Up" by Aloe Blacc was filmed at the UCLA Downtown Labor Center, and features Hareth Andrade, who was a Dream Summer intern.  Hareth interned at the AFL-CIO, and spoke at the AFL-CIO Convention in September 2013.  She launched a national campaign to stop the deportation of her father.

 

The second video, "Meet the New American Sweatshop", on the car wash campaign was produced by CuĂ©ntame, a film company in Los Angeles.  The UCLA Labor Center did the groundbreaking research on the car wash industry that was used to enact new state legislation to strengthen enforcement of labor standards.  This research was also instrumental in obtaining support from the AFL-CIO and the Steelworkers to launch an organizing campaign that has succeeded in organizing 15 car washes in Los Angeles.  The two film narrators are both UCLA graduates who were organizers on the car wash campaign. and many of the action shots feature former UCLA students and interns.

 

The third video, "Dream Summer", was produced by Pocho, a Chicano film maker in Los Angeles.  Dream Summer 2011 was launched by the UCLA Labor Center, and was the first national internship and scholarship program for undocumented students.  Over the past three years, Dream Summer has placed over 400 immigrant youth in social justice organizations in 15 states, and raised more than $2 million in scholarships.  Dream Summer interns were instrumental in the national campaign for Deferred Action, and are now leading the fight against deportations.
