Hello dear UALE sisters and brothers,
I hope this finds you all as well as possible in these times.

I'm writing to let you know about, and urge you to sign on to, a national effort to push for more federal funding for higher education, both public and private. The Bargaining for the Common Good project has pulled together a group of higher ed union folks to develop strategies to fight to protect higher education funding. The group drafted a letter (attached) that we want to issue publicly with as many public education unions as possible signing on.

Please take a few minutes to read the email below and raise this issue with your unions. Sara Myklebust (email below) needs to hear back from you by 7 pm EST next Tuesday, May 26, to add your organization to the letter. To do that, she needs your organization's name and the name and contact information for a contact in your union.

Thank you. Stay safe and strong!

Hello participants from past BCG Higher Ed Convenings,

Over the last few weeks, members of BCG's Advisory Committee have convened calls around the urgency of responding to the impacts of the COVID-19 and economic crises on higher education. The realities we are confronting are stark - our loved ones and colleagues are getting sick, losing homes, jobs and lives while governors and mayors are reopening cities and states. Brown President Paxon released an op-ed in the NY Times calling to reopen higher ed in the fall despite the fact our members and communities aren't safe. We appreciated CUNY's Corey Rubin New Yorker response.

We want to create tools for folks on the ground to go on offense. With that in mind, we have put together a letter, "Here’s How We Not Just Reopen, But Transform Universities" (and attached as a PDF) that we hope can galvanize higher education unions and our community allies to fight, Bargaining for the Common Good-style, for the universities we need and deserve. We're excited to have union locals across the country signing onto the letter.

Please share the letter with others and let us know if your organization wants to sign on by emailing Sara Myklebust, BCG Research Director, at with the names of the key contact(s) for your organization and their email/contact information.

In solidarity,
BCG Higher Ed Team
