Position Overview The SEIU- UHW West and Joint Employer Education Fund is seeking to contract with an inspiring instructor to facilitate classes on environmental sustainability for housekeepers in hospitals. Our curriculum consists of seven core modules covering basic green topics such as waste reduction and recycling, energy and water conservation, green cleaning, communication, etc. It was designed to allow workers to actively participate in greening their medical centers. The training will be conducted at the Kaiser Permanente hospital in Baldwin Park through early spring 2015 on Wednesdays from 5:00pm – 6:30pm, 3 times a month, and Thursday evening from 10-11:30pm, twice a month. Additional hours may be available as well. It is not required that you be a subject matter expert to teach this curriculum. A frontline worker will also be available to co-facilitate classes. Classes consist of small group activities, brainstorming, and large group discussions, to allow participants an opportunity to share their experience and knowledge and build upon their current understanding. Specific Duties & Responsibilities o Facilitate 1.5hr classes on the “Greening of Healthcare” for hospital housekeepers, that introduce basic vocabulary and concepts related to environmental sustainability o Coordinate instruction duties with a frontline worker co-facilitator. o Mentor and provide feedback to worker co-facilitators o Stay in close communication with the Education Fund Program Coordinator to insure outcomes are met. o Periodically participate in labor-management committee meetings. Qualifications o Knowledge of environmental sustainability practices and climate change o Experience in “teaching for empowerment” or instruction using participatory education methods o Familiarity with labor unions and cooperative labor-management relationships o Ability to teach to multiple learning styles and connect with workers o Command of adult learning principles and familiarity with interpersonal dynamics within the workplace o Bilingual in Spanish preferred o Experience in the Healthcare Industry preferred o A sense of humor and creativity preferred Assignments/Pay o SALARY RANGE: $40.00 per hour, including one hour of prep time for each module at $28/hr. o WORK HOURS: The class will be held on Wednesdays, from 5:00- 6:30pm three times per month, and on Thursdays from 10-11:30pm twice a month. Additional time will be allocated to coordinate instruction with worker-trainers. o LOCATION: Instruction will take place at Kaiser Permanente Baldwin Park Medical Center.
